Wix Review

Here is our wix review to help you make a good decision. Wix is designed to be a turnkey website designer and marketer.  They have built a very polished guided setup that asks a few questions to guide you to an appropriate template/style.  This seems to work pretty well at getting you to an initial setup.  However, like any site, you will want to customize.  At a minimum, you will want to put in your own images and content regarding your products, blog, etc.  This is where the “rubber hits the road”.  Here is our assessment:

Wix Review – Strengths:

• Each block on the page has a “library” of different image and text combos to actually show you what it might look like.  This can greatly speed up site construction and maintenance, if the “template” works for you
• “Guided flows” for initial website setup
• Guided flow for search engine optimization (SEO) setup that helps you get higher ranking on search results like Google or Bing
• Keeps a site history where you can restore prior versions if you make a “mistake”

Wix Review – Areas to Improve:

• Two main modes, a guided flow that simplifies your choices and a “regular” editor.  The two modes and variety of templates and options made it confusing to navigate, since getting something done takes a slightly different approach depending on your interface.  Wealth of “pre-canned” content pieces can overload, and make it more difficult to find what you need.
• In the guided flow, you don’t really edit on the page.  All of the editing is done in a sub-menu on the left side of the page.  I really found this annoying on my larger monitor, since I was continually moving my mouse from on the page to the left rail to edit.
• Like other simplified web builders, you don’t have full control over the url structure.
• If the pre-canned templates don’t meet your needs, you have very little capability to customize, and you will end up needing to hire someone to customize your site.

Wix Review – Overall:

If you want a guided flow to walk you through an initial site setup, I think Wix was one of the better ones that we have seen.  It’s library of templates and designs seem robust, and if you can live within those constraints, then this solution will probably work well for you.
